5G still a concern? Answers to the most frequently asked questions of users are provided

On the occasion of World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, we present the most important facts about the 5G connection that will soon reach Lithuanian residents. According to experts, the fifth generation communication network will be more powerful and faster than 4G, which will ensure faster and smoother experiences for users. This innovative technology will provide higher data transfer speed and reliability, lower latency and huge network capacity.

"The 5G connection experience will be even smoother and more reliable than current mobile networks. The 5G network is the basis for the creation and operation of augmented reality services - all this is just the beginning, but we are sure that the potential and possibilities of this technology will expand even more when 5G communication becomes available in everyday life. However, the introduction of this technology at the initial stage will not be a revolution, but rather an evolution," said Valerij Kovzan, Technical Director of Tele2 for the Baltic States.

What are the benefits of 5G connectivity for consumers?

5G connections will be on average 2 or even 3 times faster than 4G, and the higher download speeds will be clearly noticeable - in everyday activities, this means faster downloads of movies, videos and songs. Due to the shorter delay time, users will be able to better use various services: online games, self-driving vehicles or drones. 5G will also provide advantages in large events, where a better and more stable connection will be ensured. Finally, the 5G network is significantly more secure and faster than public Wi-Fi networks. It also provides better quality video calls and HD images on the go.

Will 5G require equipment changes?

In order to use the 5G network, you will need a device that supports the 5G network. Information on whether you can use 5G on your device can be found on the operator's or device manufacturer's website, if it is not available, you will need to contact the operator. Older devices will continue to work successfully on previous generation networks and will not be affected by the new 5G network. The new devices will be able to work not only in the 5G network, but also in the networks of previous generations. In addition, 5G devices will be able to achieve even higher download speeds if a 4G connection is also used. There will be no need to change the SIM card to ensure 5G connection, as it will also work successfully in the 5G network.

When will 5G services be available in Lithuania?

According to V. Kovzan, if frequency auctions go smoothly, then residents of big cities will be able to start using 5G connection by the end of this year. Later, depending on the demand and capabilities of 5G equipment, the services will be expanded throughout the country.

The purchase of a 3500 MHz license is not necessary for 5G, but this frequency is important because of its wide bandwidth, it can transfer large amounts of data extremely quickly. This is not the only band that can be used for 5G communication - operators have different frequency bands where today's technologies work (2G, 3G, 4G). In the future, they can be successfully used for 5G communication, precisely this flexibility and efficiency will be one of the biggest advantages of 5G. Tele2 has tested and prepared 5G technology, so as soon as they receive the necessary frequencies, they will be able to install and provide the service to users.
