Sony introduces the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II (model SEL2470GM2), a new G Master series lens. It is one of the world's smallest and lightest standard zoom E-mount lenses for the Alpha series of system cameras, and is suitable for both still and video applications.
Introduced six years ago, the predecessor of this lens attracted a lot of interest, and the 24-70 mm focal length became one of the most popular lenses of this type. Sony's new lens model has been refined based on user feedback and is equipped with advanced optical technology. Among the improvements made based on user feedback: two zoom modes, Tight and Smooth, a new aperture/brightness control ring, programmable focus hold buttons, improved tactile feedback of the focus ring, a new front hood for easier application of light filters, closer center of gravity at the rear of the lens for more comfortable handling.
The "FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II" lens stands out for its flexibility of use and allows you to capture high-definition photos and video images. High resolution is ensured over the entire frame area, even with the aperture wide open. The newly designed optical channel consists of 5 spherical elements, which include 2 high-precision XA type and 2 Super ED type lenses. The lens uses a floating focus mechanism that, together with the optical elements, prevents chromatic aberration, and provides unparalleled image resolution throughout the frame at all zoom and aperture levels.
The optical elements of the lens are covered with a special coating "Nano AR Coating II", which prevents unwanted reflections and object doubling effects when shooting in difficult conditions. Thanks to the 11-plate aperture, this lens produces a smooth background effect throughout almost the entire zoom range.
The minimum focusing distance with this lens is 21cm at the 24mm setting and 30cm at the 70mm setting, and the maximum image magnification is 0.32x.
For autofocus, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens uses Sony's original XD linear motors with high precision. This lens is also capable of high-speed shooting at up to 30fps and 4K 120p video. Compared to the previous lens, the autofocus tracking mode of the new model is up to 2 times faster. In addition, autofocus tracking is available with a fixed aperture setting, which allows fast-moving subjects to remain sharp when shooting them in high-speed mode.
The maximum aperture of F2.8, extremely accurate autofocus mode, versatile control options and high reliability allow the "FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II" lens to be used for filming in various situations. New optical lens technologies reduce unwanted effects such as focus flicker, focus and axis shift during filming. The lens also supports focus flicker compensation, which can be used with compatible Alpha series cameras.
There's also a manual focus mode for filming needs, which makes it easy to repeat focus with a precise focusing ring. The manual aperture ring also makes it easier to control the amount of light entering the lens and create smoother transitions in the field of the shot.
The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II weighs 695g and is about 20% lighter. lighter than its predecessor. The lens is also about 16 mm shorter, and overall its body is reduced by about 18 percent. The lens has updated protection against dust and moisture, and its reliable construction allows the lens to be used even in difficult environmental conditions. The lens buttons and switches are covered with rubber, rubber gaskets are used in the control rings. The front lens is coated with fluorine, which repels water, grease and other dirt, and thanks to the special coating, they can be cleaned more easily.
